When touching the case, the electricity takes the path of least resistance to ground - as the power supply shell is grounded, so is the case. Therefore, the electricity travels through the case to ground.

I have an anti-static mat and an anti-static wrist strap that I use while working on my computers. The other day I went to touch the external of a case of a freshly built $1,400 system and there was a strong esd between my finger and the exterior of the case. It was the bottom of the case to be precise. I wonder if this damaged any internal components. Considering the system had yet to be plugged into a wall socket, I am extra worried. I know they say to discharge yourself on the case before touching anything inside, but can an esd damage anything if the case is closed and one occurs on the outside of the case? I am thinking with my luch a 20,000+ esd went from me to my case or from my case to me. The question is did it go through anything inside the computer? With my bad luck it probably went through everything.

Thanks,
JHelm
